From Steigert to Scheibler | a walk in the German footsteps in the former district of Górna
The eastern part of the former Górna district used to be a real melting pot of nations. The people who built Łódź around today’s Przybyszewskiego Street were Germans, Silesians, Czechs and Austrians. Of course, there were also Polish and Jewish people. All of them created a unique patchwork community in an area whose history is still not very well known, although settlers arrived here as early as the first half of the 19th century.
Where exactly was Szlezyng, who were its most prominent residents, what role did the former Zarzewska Street play in the development of this part of the city, and what influence did Karol Scheibler’s empire have on the neighbourhood? We will seek answers to these questions during a walk organised by Fundacja Kwela of Łódź.
