Records (of) the Revolution | CHOREA Theatre

Demonstration of the workshop work of the educational and artistic project “Records (of) the Revolution”, which is the culmination of a series of drama workshops led by CHOREA Theatre and Krzysztof Kopka.

The project “Records (of) the Revolution” focused on working with the method of documentary theatre using verbatim and elements of body, voice and rhythm work. The workshop activities was focused on exploring the history of revolutions that shaped the city of Łodź and individual stories.

Workshop participants listened to the echoes of stories that still live in the memory, consciousness and identity of the people of Łódź. By appealing to collective memory, the memory of place and the consciousness of the body, what remained in the people of the former revolutionaries was unearthed to retell the forgotten stories of Łódź. Wanting to reconstruct the history of revolution, rebellion and the struggle for dignity, a performative event was created that became an exciting journey into the past.

Demonstration of the workshop work is also a prelude to a larger performance, which will be a joint work of CHOREA Theatre and the H. Modrzejewska Theatre. The premiere of this performance will take place in 2025, as part of the celebrations of the 120th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1905 Revolution in Łódź.

CHOREA Theatre is a team of people – a resilient and uncountable group of artists, performers, musicians, dancers, actors, theatre practitioners and theorists. They creates interdisciplinary artistic, educational and social projects: performances, concerts, workshops and shows. They uses innovative, original working methods that go beyond the cultural mainstream. Their activities are aimed at adults, young people and children, including regular theatregoers, those with difficult access to the arts and those seeking alternative cultural activities. Their work focuses on teamwork, partnership activities, group dynamics, relationship building, body and voice awareness, musicality and the discovery of creative potential.

The theatre was established on 10th February 2004. Since 2007 it has had its permanent seat in the former Scheibler and Grohman factories at st. Tymienieckiego 3 in Łódź, where, together with the Łódź Art Center Foundation, it forms the Art Factory. In the Art Factory, CHOREA Theatre coordinates theatrical, educational and social activities.

This year, CHOREA Theatre is once again returning to work on the history of the 1905 Revolution. This time, the artists are carrying out the educational and artistic project “Records (of) the Revolution”. It is a series of workshops, conducted using the documentary theatre method, with elements of physical training for the actor, developed by CHOREA Theatre.
