Yanka Rudzka’s project is in progress

The second residency of the Yanka Rudzka Project is currently underway in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Following research conducted in November, photographer Anna Zielińska is collaborating with Joanna Leśnierowska and Brazilian colleagues to create materials for a multimedia installation that will be presented as part of this year’s Łódź Multicultural Festival in November (save the date!). At the heart of the project is the body as a space of memory and a performative archive of choreographic knowledge. One part of the emerging installation is a video featuring 86-year-old Lia Robatto—the last living soloist of the Polish avant-garde choreographer Yanka Rudzka. Especially for us, Lia danced the gestures and movement qualities she had memorized from her direct work with Rudzka. Her participation constitutes an act of intergenerational transmission and the updating of choreographic heritage in action.

The residency and project are being carried out in collaboration with Teatro Vila Velha, one of Brazil’s most renowned cultural institutions, which will also present the installation in Salvador next year (April 2027).
The project is part of the Adam Mickiewicz Institute’s “ReSide” program.
